Should Stackelberg Mixed Strategies Be Considered a Separate Solution Concept?

چکیده
It is sometimes the case that one solution concept in game theory is equivalent to applying another solution concept to a modified version of the game. In such cases, does it make sense to think of the former as a truly separate solution concept, or should we entirely subordinate it to the latter? The answer probably depends on the particular circumstances, and indeed the literature takes different approaches in different cases. In this article, I consider the specific example of Stackelberg mixed strategies, and argue that it makes sense to regard these as a separate solution concept, even though a Stackelberg mixed strategy can also be seen as a subgame perfect Nash equilibrium of a corresponding extensive-form game. The analysis of this special case may have implications for other solution concepts.

On Stackelberg Mixed Strategies
It is sometimes the case that one solution concept in game theory is equivalent to applying another solution concept to a modified version of the game. In such cases, does it make sense to study the former separately (as it applies to the original representation of the game), or should we entirely subordinate it to the latter? The answer probably depends on the particular circumstances, and ind...
متن کاملMonotonic Maximin: A Robust Stackelberg Solution against Boundedly Rational Followers
There has been recent interest in applying Stackelberg games to infrastructure security, in which a defender must protect targets from attack by an adaptive adversary. In real-world security settings the adversaries are humans and are thus boundedly rational. Most existing approaches for computing defender strategies against boundedly rational adversaries try to optimize against specific behavi...
متن کاملFighting m-criminals with Bayesian Stackelberg games
Bayesian Stackelberg games have been used to compute optimal patrol strategies for the security of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by modelling the security situation as a 1-leader, 1-follower, Bayesian game where there is one leader type and an arbitrary number of follower types. A previous approach, named DOBSS, computes the Stackelberg solution for this game by solving a Mixed In...
متن کاملTeam-optimal closed-loop Stackelberg strategies in hierarchical control problems
This paper is concerned with the derivation of closed-loop Stackelberg (CLS) solutions of a class of continuous-time two-player nonzero-sum differential games characterized by linear state dynamics and quadratic cost functionals. Explicit conditions are obtained for both the finite and infinite horizon problems under which the CLS solution is a representation of the optimal feedback solution of...
متن کاملNash and Stackelberg solutions to general linear-quadratic two-player difference games. II. Open-closed strategies
This paper deals with difference games in which the information structures of the players are not equal. Nash and Stackelberg solutions to deterministic linear-quadratic two-player difference games are presented. The open-closed strategies are considered where one of the players can only use the initial state whereas the other has access to perfect memory information of the state. Stackelberg o...
